Chalet Backstage
Zermatt, Switzerland
Presented as one of Zermatt's most exclusive luxury chalets. It began as a 1940s Valais house that designer Heinz Julen modernised and extended by two storeys in local larch and large glass areas, giving 360-degree views of the village and the Matterhorn.
Five double bedrooms, one with a high sleeper giving an extra bed for a child. The open-gable roof creates a combined living, dining and kitchen space with a fireplace. A hydraulic whirlpool for up to 6 sits opposite the fireplace; at the press of a button the roof opens and the pool rises above it.
Bedrooms are spread over two floors below. The cellar holds a small private home cinema, games room, workstation, toilet and shower, next to a ski room with heated boot racks, all reached by a private lift. Furniture was designed and built in Heinz Julen's Zermatt studio and the chalet shows contemporary art from Zermatt galleries.
Guests get complimentary access to the Genesis wellness centre at the Backstage Hotel Zermatt.
Bedrooms 1-5: double bed (one has a high sleeper for an extra child's bed).
